House in Longview, Texas

A hub city where three highways meet

Longview is the seat of Gregg County, with 81,638 people at the 2020 census and close to 300,000 across the metro area that takes in Gregg, Upshur and Rusk counties. Interstate 20 and U.S. highways 80 and 259 meet here just north of the Sabine River, and the city covers about 56 square miles. A spread-out city like this has homes from every decade, many on concrete slabs, so leaks under the floor are a real concern. See slab leak repair.

Built around the railroad

The town began in 1870 when O.H. Methvin Sr. sold land to the railroad, and it was incorporated on May 17, 1871. The name is said to come from two surveyors who looked out from Methvin's porch and said, "What a long view!" Neighborhoods that grew outward from that rail town can have supply pipe and drain lines of very different ages on the same street. Our repiping page covers the signs that old pipe is wearing out.
