How Old Is Your Water Heater?
Before deciding whether to repair or replace a water heater, find out how old it is. The answer is printed on the tank.
Request a plumberFind the label
The rating label is on the side of the tank, often near the top or next to the gas control. In a garage or attic closet you may need a flashlight.
Decode the serial number
Most brands code the manufacture date into the serial number, usually with letters or digits for the month and year. Search the brand name with "serial number date" to decode it.
Size and fuel
The label lists the capacity in gallons and whether the heater uses natural gas, propane or electricity. Gas models show the BTU input; electric models show voltage and wattage.
What the age means
Many tanks last around eight to twelve years. A heater in that range that leaks, makes popping noises or gives rusty water is worth planning to replace.
Attic or garage
If your heater is in the attic, check the drain pan too. A rusty or wet pan is a warning sign even if the tank looks dry.
Next step
Send the label details with your request. See water heater service.
First-hour rating
Many labels also show a first-hour rating, which tells you how much hot water the heater can supply in a busy hour. If your household runs out in the mornings, that number matters more than tank size when choosing a replacement.
Expansion tanks
Many homes now have an expansion tank fitted near the water heater. It gives water room to expand as it heats so pressure doesn't strain the tank and fittings. If yours doesn't have one, ask the plumber whether it needs one when the heater is serviced or replaced.
